Service · Hedge reduction

Bringing an overgrown hedge back into proportion, costed by stage.

Reduction is a different job to a routine trim: more material to remove, more careful staging on species that don't regenerate from old wood. Here's what actually drives the price.

What's included

The cost breakdown

Most reductions in Sittingbourne and Milton Regis fall between £280 and £850, occasionally more on a long run of mature leylandii.

Hedge reduction, cost by component
ComponentTypical rangeWhat drives it
Labour & equipment£180–£560Length, height, how much has to come off, whether it needs staging over two visits
Waste disposal£60–£220A hard reduction can produce a van-load of arisings; leylandii and conifer weigh more than deciduous
Access£0–£70Tower or cherry picker for anything over roughly 3m, rear-garden access, overhead cables

Indicative only. A site visit is usually needed for anything over head height before we confirm the figure.

Why staging matters, and why it's on the invoice

Leylandii, thuja and other conifers do not regenerate from brown wood - cut past the green needle-bearing zone and that face stays brown forever. A hard one-visit reduction on an overgrown conifer hedge is possible but usually leaves visible brown patches for a year or more. We stage it instead: an intermediate cut this visit, then a second cut to final height the following year once new growth has filled the sides. Each stage is quoted and invoiced separately, which is why a reduction sometimes shows as two smaller costs rather than one large one.

See our detailed DIY vs professional cost comparison if you're deciding whether to tackle a reduction yourself.
