"I'll just do it myself" is the right call for a small front hedge. For a genuinely overgrown one it's worth totting up the real cost of DIY, not just the price of hiring a trimmer, before deciding.
The DIY cost, counted properly
The mistake most people make costing DIY is only counting the tool hire. Here's every line that actually applies to reducing a mature, overgrown hedge yourself.

The professional cost for the same job

- Insurance. If a branch takes out a fence, a car, or a neighbour's greenhouse, that's covered. A DIY accident is entirely on you.
- Correct staging. Cut a conifer hard in one go and you risk permanent brown patches (see below) - a mistake that costs far more to fix than the job would have cost done right first time.
- Disposal already sorted. No van hire, no second trip to Gas Road, no bin subscription overflow.
- No time off work. Two days of annual leave has a real cost even if it doesn't appear on an invoice.
Where DIY genuinely makes sense
A small front hedge under about 5m, at a height you can reach from the ground, on a species that's forgiving of a slightly uneven cut (privet, most shrub species) - that's a fair DIY job and the numbers favour it. Hire cost for a day trimmer plus a car-boot tip run is usually under £60, well below what we'd charge for the same small job once a call-out is factored in.
Where DIY risk outweighs the saving
Leylandii and other conifers do not regenerate from brown wood. A DIY hard cut that goes too far leaves a permanently brown, dead-looking face - the only fix is waiting years for new growth to fill in, or replacing the hedge entirely. Working at height against a dense hedge face is also the point where most DIY hedge accidents happen - ladders on soft ground, reaching too far sideways with a running trimmer. If your hedge is over roughly head height, we'd rather quote it than see you on A&E paperwork.
